Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni shared the below note with staff Thursday:
Dear colleagues,
I am writing to share the news that Simon Robinson, Executive Editor, will leave Reuters to become Director of News and Current Affairs at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. His last day will be August 20. It is sad news for us, but I am excited for Simon as he embarks upon a new professional challenge in his native country.
Nick Tattersall, Global Managing Editor, Newsroom, will take on the role of Executive Editor with effect from the date of Simon’s departure. Nick and I, in consultation with other senior leaders, will define the scope of his new role and how it will evolve over the next few weeks, and we will keep you all updated.
Simon joined the news service in 2010 and ran investigations and enterprise reporting in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for just under seven years, editing award-winning series on Iran, Russia, corporate taxation, Greek banks and migration. Between 2017 and 2019, Simon was Regional Editor for EMEA, running our single biggest region and overseeing everything from breaking news to budgets. He became Executive Editor in October 2022 after previously serving as Global Managing Editor, Newsroom.
Simon has been a transformational editor since he joined Reuters, helping modernise our newsroom over the years by strengthening our investigative and enterprise reporting, rethinking the way the newsroom is managed, and sharpening our digital presence. Throughout, he has made sure we stay true to the things that have always mattered at Reuters: accuracy, speed, depth, trust.
Nick joined Reuters in 2000 and has run news bureaus and reported from around Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He currently oversees the news agency’s global staff, training and development, as well as the safety and security of its journalists around the world. Nick previously served as Head of the Global News Desk, running Reuters global text editing operations, and as Managing Editor, News, for EMEA, overseeing the news file in the agency’s single biggest region.
We will have plenty of time to celebrate with Simon before he leaves. In the meantime, please join me in wishing him all the very best for the future and in congratulating Nick on his well-deserved promotion.
Best,
Alessandra
