Joe Mathewson, the former Wall Street Journal reporter who has been teaching business journalism at Northwestern University is retiring after the winter quarter.

Jerry De Jaager writes, “In 1997, Mathewson was invited to teach as an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, with duties that included teaching business journalism and overseeing some aspects of the school’s downtown newsroom. ‘I loved it from the start,’ he recalled. ‘I hadn’t realized how much I had missed being in a newsroom.’ Medill loved him back, and he became a full professor with a broad teaching, clinical, and mentorship portfolio. This year’s winter quarter will be Mathewson’s last as a Medill faculty member.

“’Some people have described my career as ‘ragged,’ because I have done a lot of different things,’ Mathewson said. ‘But there’s a common thread: As long as a job or project sustains my intellectual curiosity, I’m all in. My Medill teaching responsibilities and the fabulous students there kept my attention for thirty wonderful years.’

“When his time at Medill ends, the closing of that door is likely to open another. ‘I’m very interested in how artificial intelligence is affecting journalism, particularly aspects of journalistic ethics, and I can see myself producing articles or even a book about that,’ he said. ‘Or if not that, it could be something else. As long as there’s something worthwhile that engages my curiosity, I’ll go there.'”
