Joel Rubin, the deputy business editor at the Los Angeles Times, is joining Politico as its first-ever California senior policy editor.
An announcement from senior executive editor Alex Burns, deputy executive editor Julia Marsh, executive editor Joe Schatz and global editor-in-chief John Harris states:
In this new position, he will ensure our state policy reporting remains essential reading to people in the worlds of government, industry and advocacy, as well as millions more readers in California and beyond, who care about the governance of the world’s fifth-largest economy. The California team has been at the leading edge of our plans to expand and transform coverage for Pro subscribers, and Chris and Joel will aim to turbocharge those efforts.
Joel comes to POLITICO after more than 21 years at the Los Angeles Times, where he most recently served as deputy business editor. He held many other positions at the paper, including associate editor for new initiatives and assistant metro editor. Earlier in his career as a reporter, Joel covered federal courts, the Los Angeles Police Department and the region’s public schools. During that time, Joel contributed to coverage of the San Bernardino terror attack and 2003 Southern California wildfires for which the LAT was awarded Pulitzer Prizes for breaking news. His deep knowledge, keen eye and creative editorial brain make him the ideal match for this new and important role.
At POLITICO, Joel will oversee coverage of major issues including climate, energy, education, transportation, health, labor, technology and the state budget. He will work closely with other California team leaders on day-to-day news management, as well as with other newsroom leaders to implement POLITICO’s expansion strategy in newsgathering, audience development and events. Joel will edit high-impact stories and convene key policy teams across our Washington office, European newsroom and state-based bureaus to generate far-reaching enterprise pieces.
