Meredith Klein of Meredith and the Media spoke with Barron’s geopolitics reporter Sabrina Escobar about her job
Here is an excerpt:
You also write for Barron’s Global Signals, a premium newsletter that launched in late April, designed to help readers understand how global events impact their portfolios. Can you tell me more about the newsletter and your role in launching it?
- It’s a really exciting product. For background and context, Barron’s launched its first premium newsletter close to two years ago, Barron’s Energy Insider, and it did really well. People resonated with it, and it showed how we could have a product that was focused on a single topic and filled with curated insights on the energy market. Barron’s Global Signals is somewhat of a continuation of that, focused on geopolitics.
- There is a lot of crazy stuff happening in the world when it comes to geopolitics, so there has been a lot of interest from readers and investors on how geopolitics are going to be a part of the investing environment going forward. Geopolitics really are becoming less of a black swan event and more of a thing you have to contend with all the time and invest around.
- I applied for the role. I mentioned my experience at Oxford studying Latin American studies– I think it shows how my underlying interest has always been international politics: the more macro, global perspective. When this opportunity came up, I was very excited to throw my hat in the ring. Thankfully, everybody was very supportive and excited to let me join the team.
- I was told I was going to be heading up Global Signals in mid-March. I was on vacation when I got the call. The official newsletter launched in late April, but we did a soft launch with free editions starting in late March. I had maybe a week to get my head around the fact that I was leaving retail, starting a new beat, and starting up a new newsletter. It was a really fast turnaround.
