How Amazon reporter Rosenblatt finds stories

Robert Azula of the Seattle Times spoke with the paper’s Amazon reporter, Lauren Rosenblatt, about her job.

Here is an excerpt:

Where do you find your story ideas?

A lot of my story ideas stem from the breaking news of the day – like layoffs, new state legislation that impacts how companies post job openings or federal investigations looking at Amazon’s warehouses. Sometimes people contact me after reading one of my stories. So, I get connected with even more people – such as former Amazonians, current employees, activists and researchers – which in turn generates new stories.

I like to explore a part of business I know little about and find new ways to present it to readers, like a new technology or how a new law could impact customers. I also like to look at big trends in tech and labor and find ways to localize the story for Seattle. With Amazon and Microsoft based here, there’s usually a compelling, local angle.
