In “Good Job, New Mexico,” hosts Stacy Johnston and Leonardo Castaneda sat down with Matthew Narvaiz, business editor at the Albuquerque Journal, to talk about his job and how he got into journalism.

“It really wasn’t until I was in college that I honed my writing,” said Narvaiz, who has been the business editor since March and previously worked as a reporter for Albuquerque Business First.

He said that when he thinks about stories, he thinks about how it can be visually appealing to readers.

“We think about our art first, how we can illustrate these stories well,” said Narvaiz about its Sunday business news stories. “As far as the way I think, it’s ‘Can we take a really good photo that helps illustrate this story?'”

He starts his day by going through his emails to review whether there’s anything newsworthy. And then he’s messaging reporters and assigning stories. He also writes a daily business newsletter.
