Liriel Higa, director of audience for the New York Times opinion section, sent out the following on Friday:
I am excited to share that Hibaq Farah is joining Times Opinion as an editor on the audience team. She joins us from The Guardian where she was most recently a technology reporter.
Hibaq’s journey into journalism began as an intern at The Guardian. She then received The Guardian’s esteemed Scott Trust Bursary and attained a distinction in her interactive journalism masters at City University, with a thesis focused on TikTok and how Gen Z uses the platform. During this time Hibaq worked across various desks, and later as a general reporter before becoming a tech reporter. Hibaq has spent time looking at how harmful recommender systems on social media platforms can be. She also has profiled rising stars, reported on artificial intelligence and big tech platforms, and led an investigation into moderation at TikTok.
Hibaq was born and raised in London and holds a B.A. in literature from SOAS University of London.
Welcome, Hibaq.
