Melissa Stasiuk, head of newsroom development at The Globe and Mail in Toronto, sent out the following to the staff:
We are sorry to announce that David Milstead is leaving The Globe and Mail for a new opportunity.
David first joined us in 2009, freelancing from his home in Colorado for several years until joining Report on Business full time in 2018. He quickly became one of Canada’s most respected and feared business columnists. His brave and insightful writing – always backed by meticulous research – called out companies for poor compensation practices, questionable accounting and weak governance. His work was recognized with a SABEW Canada gold medal for column writing in 2023 and a silver medal in the same category last year. He was part of the team that won an NNA and Michener in 2022 for reporting on the Catholic Church, and part of the team that was an NNA finalist in 2022 for reporting on problems with the federal government’s CEWS program.
For six years, David has also shouldered the painstaking work of steering our annual Board Games report on corporate governance, while also handling our annual report on CEO pay. At the same time, he generously carved out time to help colleagues across the newsroom, patiently explaining financial statements, looking up data and deciphering proxy circulars. He has made many friends at The Globe, who will miss his lively conversations about baseball, music, politics and a myriad of other topics – not to mention his large containers of homemade popcorn.
David’s last day will be April 25, and he will be back in the newsroom next week for anyone who wants to say farewell in person. We wish him all the best.
