You worked for Business Insider in 2014 as a senior advertising editor for three years, and then left for The Wall Street Journal, writing the lauded CMO Today newsletter. Now you are back at Business Insider, writing its CMO Insider newsletter. What brought you back?

  • It was an incredibly formative experience, and I learned from the best of the best. Even just overhearing people’s phone calls or being in editorial meetings when they’re talking about these really incredible stories spanning politics and corporate deal-making and so on: I was lapping it all up. I got to hone my newsletter writing skills there, doing the daily CMO Today newsletter, which was really fun. They let me squeeze lots of puns and Britishisms in there, which was great.
  • I left the Wall Street Journal to try my hand at video for the first time. I was executive-producing a show at Yahoo Finance, and then I went over to Digiday. I got to work with Brian Morrissey, who’s fantastic. While at Digiday, Business Insider got in touch about potentially returning. At that point, I was itching to get back to doing that kind of big, far-reaching, widely distributed impact journalism. At that time, it was well into the Axel Springer fold after the acquisition. Business Insider was investing in growing the newsroom and producing enterprising journalism that was making me jealous.
