Nathan Rubbelke, a reporter for the St. Louis Business Journal, writes about entering the Knight-Bagehot program at Columbia University and what he hopes to learn.
Rubbelke writes, “Beginning next week, I’ll be a member of the 2025-26 class of the Knight-Bagehot fellowship, which brings together 10 mid-career business journalists to strengthen their understanding of business concepts. As fellows, we will take classes at Columbia Business School with the first-year MBA class, studying concepts that include accounting, corporate finance and statistics. I am taking a nine-month leave from the Business Journal as I complete the fellowship in New York.
“Part of the reason I never took any business classes in college is because I never aspired to be a business journalist. I had ambition to be a political journalist, studying political science at Saint Louis University and completing college internships at news outlets in Washington, D.C. In 2018, with a desire to be closer to family and friends, I took a job with the Business Journal. After a week here, I didn’t expect to last long. Then a funny thing happened: Conversations with executives about business strategy began to fascinate me and I became enamored with how the economy shapes this region.
“I’ve gotten an education over the past eight years through story interviews and source meetings, but there’s still so much to learn. My hope is that, with my studies at Columbia, I can provide more comprehensive and detailed stories when I return.”
