New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following:
We are very happy to announce a new hire in London for the Business desk’s international team.
James Paton, an experienced business journalist in London, will be our business correspondent covering a range of industrial companies with a particular focus on autos, aviation, defense and chemicals. These are industries at the front edge of European efforts to compete with China, strengthen economies tested by war and conflict, and establish deeper ties with trading partners around the world.
Jamie has spent more than two decades in newsrooms in Prague, New York, Denver, Sydney and London, covering health, energy, the economy and sports business. He has tracked down investors swindled by Bernie Madoff in Aspen, visited drought-stricken communities in the Australian Outback and explored the promise and pitfalls of multimillion-dollar gene therapies in Sicily.
Early in his career, he covered breaking news for the website of The Times as part of a joint venture with TheStreet.com, and went on to jobs at Reuters, the Rocky Mountain News and Bloomberg. He chronicled the development and uneven rollout of Covid vaccines during the Covid-19 pandemic.
After 13 years at Bloomberg and a stint as a director at Brunswick in London, Jamie freelanced for a year and a half, working for Prof G Media and other organizations. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University and a master’s degree from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. His career in news began at age 11 when he delivered the local Gannett paper — door to door, seven days a week — in his community in New York State.
