Alan Sipress

The Washington Post has tapped Alan Sipress as a senior editor on the Foreign desk, to oversee coverage across a broad range of territory extending from the Philippines to West Africa, including bureaus in Southeast Asia, India, Afghanistan/Pakistan and Africa.

He will also work with correspondents to highlight coverage on climate change, technology and global rivalries.

Recently, Sipress served as Middle East editor, overseeing coverage from Morocco to Iran. His coverage has been recognized by the Overseas Press Club with four awards or citations.

He also edited the Post’s international reporting and also led its coverage of Russia. He formerly worked on the Financial and National desk. Previously, he worked as a Middle East correspondent at the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He is the author of “Fatal Strain,” a 2010 book that tracked the spread of the avian flu virus and warned of a coming pandemic.

Sipress is a graduate of Princeton University.
