Elizabeth Johnstone will join The New York Times politics desk as its first news director. She begins July 31.
Johnstone joins from NBC News Digital, where she served as managing editor for politics and a senior digital politics editor overseeing the network’s entire digital politics team.
She also held the posts of deputy politics editor and politics editor. At MSNBC and NBC News, she worked as a digital news and homepage editor.
At D Magazine for 5 years, Johnstone joined as an editorial intern and then served as events editor – FrontRow coordinator. She then held the post of online arts editor before becoming the managing editor.
She has also worked as a fashion features intern at Harper’s Bazaar, Hearst Magazines, and was an assistant managing editor at Washington Square News.
Johnstone graduated from New York University.
