NY Times promotes Stevenson to post of Washington editor

Richard Stevenson

The following announcement was sent out from The New York Times Washington bureau chief Elisabeth Bumiller:

I’m very happy to tell you that Richard Stevenson, who goes by Dick, will be Washington editor, the No. 2 position in the bureau, effective today. He’s been a superb partner to me and a huge help to reporters since he returned to D.C. in 2018. In his new position he’ll continue as our enterprise editor as he helps manage an increasingly large bureau.

Dick has edited some of our most ambitious stories on the pandemic and on various investigative topics over the past three years. He has done fantastic work with his own team, and has been a great collaborator on projects with other reporters in the bureau and in New York. He is an outstanding journalist who is fair-minded, unflappable and a very good guy.

In his new role, he will add coverage of the Supreme Court to his portfolio in addition to helping generate big enterprise ideas across the bureau.

Dick joined The Times in 1985 as a reporter trainee in BizDay. He went on to become a correspondent in the Los Angeles bureau from 1986 to 1992, and in London from 1992 to 1996. He then came to Washington, where he covered economics and then the White House before becoming deputy bureau chief in 2006, a role he held until 2011. He was also politics editor for the 2008 and 2012 cycles.

In 2013, he served as Europe editor, first in Paris, where he oversaw the International Herald Tribune’s transition into The New York Times International Edition, and then in London. After a stint working in New York, he returned to the Washington bureau as enterprise editor.

Please raise a virtual glass to him. And hopefully we can all do it in person soon.

— Elisabeth
