Gannett | USA Today Network has appointed Mark Russell VP and region editor for the South. He will continue to serve as executive editor of The Commercial Appeal in Memphis.
In his new role, Russell will oversee 18 newsrooms in Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. Before that, he worked as an opinion and engagement editor at The Commercial Appeal, where he also served as managing editor and news director.
He was an editor at the Orlando Sentinel, a business editor and then assistant managing editor for Metro at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, where he worked for more than nine years.
He was an assistant Metro editor at the Boston Globe and a staff reporter at the Wall Street Journal.
Russell graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
