The Korea bureau chief is responsible for all coverage from the two Koreas, including the nuclear advance of North Korea and major corporate stories from South Korea, most notably on Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor.
The bureau has a small team of reporters filing for all platforms, often at anti-social hours, since that’s when North Korea likes to test missiles. The South Korean economy, a bellwether of international trade, is also an important part of the news file.
The role presents a unique challenge since WSJ staff are not routinely able to report from North Korea. The bureau chief needs to have strong news judgement to discern significant developments from the North and an entrepreneurial spirit to set our coverage apart from the competition.
