The New York Times is seeking an editor to help run our coverage of the American economy and the impact of policy changes on workers and businesses.
This editor needs to be able to juggle news and enterprise in many different forms. You will organize coverage of major data releases like the monthly jobs report, plan out features that help explain how the economy is faring as tariffs, interest rates, inflation and the markets take their toll on consumers and businesses.
The editor will work as part of a team led by an editor in Washington, and may be called on to edit coverage of the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, I.R.S. and other agencies. You will partner with colleagues in the United States and abroad to cover global developments.
This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities
- Managing a team of reporters you will help conceptualize stories, handle breaking news, manage live blogs and edit long-form features.
- You will collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.
- You will lead reporters to deliver clear and engaging reporting, adhering to The New York Times style guidelines and standards.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- You will report to an economic editor in Washington D.C.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience editing news coverage on topics including economics, finance, or corporate news.
- Demonstrated ability to develop reporters of varied experience and manage teams.
- Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms.
- Strong editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
Preferred Qualifications
- A strong understanding of Times style and standards
- 10+ years as a reporter and editor.
- A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $170,000 – $200,000 USD
