WSJ seeks a video editor to produce originals

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a video editor for its Originals video team. In this role, you will edit topical, news-pegged, feature videos, ranging in length from two to seven minutes across a variety of coverage areas focusing on business. Top candidates for this position will have a professional background in video journalism and demonstrate exceptional story editing. We are looking for someone who can juggle many tasks and is excited about editing videos quickly to take advantage of recent news..

Please note, this is not an entry-level position and it is not a position editing documentaries. Because this is a global news operation, candidates need to show successful executions of timely news projects that have been done in just a few hours, as well as videos produced with longer lead times.

You will report to the Executive Producer on the Originals team. You will start this job remotely but will eventually be based in our New York office.

You will:

  • Edit 2-7 minute business-related news stories, often on tight deadlines
  • Work with producers to best tell their story once in post-production
  • Take a script and bring the story to life in the edit, while adding input on how to structure the story
  • Source accurate and relevant visuals for stories from newswires and other available sources to edit
  • Edit breaking news stories as needed
  • Manage every aspect of video post-production from start to finish
  • Clean up audio and video issues from the field to be acceptable for use
  • Manage multiple projects in various stages of edit
  • Ensure that all journalistic and legal standards are followed at all times
  • Be able to work late hours and weekends both as part of a regular weekend rotation and as news developments may warrant
  • Complete additional duties as assigned, including breaking news assignments

You have:

  • At least three years’ experience editing videos in a daily news environment, preferably at a global news organization
  • An ability to convey news and tell stories in creative ways using high-quality video and graphics
  • A deep understanding of, and interest in, The Wall Street Journal’s core topic areas as well as strong editorial judgment and broad knowledge and interest in current events and news
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Experience with multiple camera setups, including but not limited to the Sony FS5, FS7, a7S
  • Skills working with studio lighting setups and doing field shoots
  • Professional-level understanding of Adobe Suite, with a high level of expertise in Premiere and basic knowledge of After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Experience editing quality video content efficiently and often under tight deadline constraints
  • The ability to collaborate well and communicate clearly with exceptional written skills.
