WBZ-TV seeks an assignment editor

WBZ-TV news has an immediate opening for a hardworking dynamic multi-skilled Assignment Editor. The individual is a highly competitive news professional with a passion for breaking news that flourishes with beating the competition and getting the story. This candidate must be able to work in a fast paced collaborative environment and prioritize responsibilities for WBZ’s linear and digital platforms. You will partner and engage with all aspects of the public and display a high degree of sensitivity to the concerns of viewers and constituencies with different points of view.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage newsroom assignments, monitor phones, coordinate logistics, monitor scanners and social media for breaking news
  • Work with Assignment Manager, Assistant News Director, Digital Managing Editor on story ideas, and expanded coverage plans while finding opportunities to differentiate WBZ News coverage that includes diverse perspectives
  • Meet deadlines in breaking news situations for both broadcast and digital while logistically dispatching crews efficiently
  • Must advocate breaking news for our streaming platform by communicating with the team and ensuring information is accurate in a timely manner
  • Dispatch crews to stories and breaking news, using appropriate logistical and journalistic judgement
  • Assist in finding stories with emphasis on our key brand points and tracking stories as they develop for broadcast and digital
  • Handle time and logistics to make sure the selected stories are covered efficiently with available staff
  • Generate original stories and develop follow-ups, track social media for news gathering, update information in newsroom database, maintain contact lists, and story files
  • Develop new contacts with government agencies (city, state, federal) and public relations representatives

Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years prior TV News Assignment Editor experience is strongly preferred, however, a significant experience in Print | Digital reporting or Radio News will be considered.
  • Minimum two years newsroom experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task

Estimated salary: $40K – $50.6K a year
