The Post and Courier, South Carolina’s largest news organization, is looking for a motivated digital news producer to join our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom.
The digital news producer is a key player in packaging and promoting our high-quality journalism across digital platforms, including our website, app, social media, newsletters, podcasts and other emerging platforms.
We are looking for a creative, driven journalist who has a passion for digital storytelling and audience development. Ideal candidates will be energetic, curious, detail-oriented and unafraid to experiment in an ever-evolving digital landscape. They should be a self-starter who can work independently as well as collaborate across departments.
The position, which reports to the Digital Editor, is based out of our Charleston office.
Responsibilities:
- Find the most exciting ways to present our stories across social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, in an effort to grow these audiences and develop loyal readers.
- Write and edit newsletter products as needed, including our flagship Morning and Evening Roundups.
- Curate our hand-designed homepage, with guidance from analytics, news leadership and your own news judgment.
- Optimize stories for the web by writing headlines and summaries and adding hyperlinks.
- Use analytics to make real-time digital decisions, such as sending a push notification for a story that is being widely read.
- Coach reporters and editors on best digital practices, including guidance on SEO and web presentation of stories.
- Help develop and expand our video and podcast offerings through collaborations with our reporters and visuals team.
- Use Google Trends and Google Search Console to help our stories rank high in search.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Strong journalism skills and some experience in a newsroom environment.
- Experience understanding and communicating analytics to guide decisions, using platforms such as Google Analytics.
- A working knowledge of SEO best practices.
A working knowledge of HTML and web production basics, with an eye for optimizing desktop and mobile performance. - Experience with social media and an understanding of how different types of content excel on different platforms.
Knowledge of how to utilize maps, charts, timelines, quizzes, polls and other tools to enhance digital content. - Ability to multi-task and quickly troubleshoot.
Strong writing and sharp editing skills. - A passion for local, state and national news, and a strong awareness of the newsworthiness of a given topic.
Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, days, nights and weekends as needed.
Requirements, minimum education level and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field.
2-3 years of demonstrated journalism experience. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through.
