The LaGrange Daily News & The Valley Times-News seek a managing editor

We are seeking an experienced copy editor to lead two energetic and passionate newspaper staffs at The Valley Times-News in Lanett, Alabama, and The LaGrange Daily News in LaGrange, Georgia. As a newspaper editor with our Boone Newsmedia affiliates, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on our publications and communities. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about journalism, excels at copy editing, possesses impeccable news judgment and loves chasing news stories.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee two news staffs located in Lanett, Alabama, and LaGrange, Georgia, ensuring accurate and high-quality coverage of local news in both locations.
  • Collaborate with the publisher to establish news budgets for each edition, assign stories and ensure comprehensive community news coverage.
  • Lead pagination and design of the daily newspaper, special sections, and magazines.
  • Capture high-quality photos for story coverage using a staff camera or personal DSLR and edit photos using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Utilize strong knowledge of major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to post breaking news immediately and effectively engage with the audience. Proficiency in using WordPress is required.
  • Use data tools such as Google Analytics to inform news coverage decisions on a regular basis.
  • Provide football coverage on Friday nights during the fall season and assist with other sports coverage as needed throughout the year.
  • Live in Chambers County, Alabama, or Troup County, Georgia, as a requirement for the position.
  • Be available for night and weekend work as necessary.
  • Represent our newspapers at community events, serving as a professional face of our leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications.
  • Experience in news reporting for print publications, either through college or post-graduate work.

Recommended Skills:

  • Proven reporting, writing, and editing skills.
  • Experience with pagination or use of Adobe InDesign.
  • Proficiency in AP style.
  • Ability to develop relationships with community leaders and news sources.
  • Understanding of how local governments function.
  • Proficiency with social media applications, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Experience with content-publishing websites like WordPress.
  • Ability to contribute story ideas.
  • Proficiency in shooting high-quality photographs.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite products, including InDesign, Lightroom, and Photoshop.
