Newsletters are an increasingly important element of The Economist’s digital growth, providing opportunities to reach new audiences and increase engagement among existing subscribers. As they expand their portfolio of emails and showcase their most important editorial output, an editor is needed to produce these newsletters and ensure they are sending the right material to the right people at the right times. You will be based in their newsroom in central London but can be located remotely for the time being.

Responsibilities

  • Produce multiple newsletters per week to a high standard, without errors in the publishing or delivery processes, using bespoke template-based software
  • Work closely with the newsdesk and other editorial teams to identify and present the most appropriate content in each email
  • Assist senior editors in the production, editing and fact-checking of authored passages in newsletters as appropriate
  • Attend daily stand-ups and liaise frequently with colleagues in departments such as films, podcasts, data, 1843, graphics and the picture desk
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the ways emails are used by The Economist, and how they fit into their overall strategy to maximise the engagement and retention of audiences. Also liaise regularly with colleagues around the Group whose remit includes newsletters, in areas such as marketing and client solutions
  • Provide training and basic technical support for other editors involved in the production process to ensure they follow, and keep up to speed with, best-practice techniques
  • Assist with the development and testing of improvements to existing newsletters and the creation of additional titles and/or templates for their portfolio
  • Contribute to the operation of the wider digital newsroom as required, for instance collaborating with, or deputising for, colleagues on the newsdesk or social-media teams

Knowledge, Skills, Experience

Essential

  • An innovative self-starter with excellent judgment
  • A keen eye for detail
  • The ability to present The Economist’s journalism in new ways to new audiences, while remaining true to their brand and the issues they cover

Desirable

  • Familiarity with tools such as Salesforce, CUE, Drupal, Photoshop or After Effects
  • A basic understanding of analytics and how data can be used to inform editorial decisions
