Do you want to report, edit and ski? If so, The Aspen Times is searching for the next editor to lead its newsroom in Aspen, Colorado.
On any given day, you’ll be writing and editing stories on topics as diverse as sustainability, local athletes, philanthropic endeavors, education, the police beat, real estate and entertainment.
The editor will know how to drive online audience growth, and be experienced in meeting the demands of a 24-7 news cycle, while maintaining a first-class print edition. We’re looking for someone who is equally comfortable wielding digital tools to elevate the paper’s journalism and reach and working with a rookie reporter to create an engaging and eye-catching print feature.
In addition to living in the ultimate year-round recreation playground and little city with international impact, this position offers an opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the community through the journalism the paper produces.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a staff of full-time journalists and coordinate with freelancers.
- Guide news coverage, helping reporters hone their beats and pursue journalism that will make a difference in the community.
- Edit articles for content, grammar, clarity, tone and accuracy.
- Oversee production of print edition including story placement, choosing local and regional content and setting up the copy desk to make deadlines each night.
- Oversee website with aim of maximizing online audience.
- Have knowledge of digital analytics to help drive decision-making for stories and know how to work with reporters on future story development.
- Serve as the public face of the paper in interactions with residents, from readers to elected officials.
Must relocate to the Roaring Fork Valley.
Salary: $110 – $120K, depending on experience
