Roanoke Times seeks real estate reporter

The Roanoke Times, an award-winning metro in the mountains of beautiful Southwest Virginia, is seeking an experienced business reporter to cover the real estate and construction sector, as well to report on the region’s nonprofit organizations from a business perspective.

The position will focus on the residential and commercial real estate markets – including the attendant construction business and local developers – in the Roanoke and New River valleys and around Smith Mountain Lake, a thriving community of full-time residents and vacation homes. This reporter also will bring a critical business eye to our coverage of nonprofits, including both regional organizations and local branches of national nonprofits such as United Way and Habitat for Humanity. General assignment business duties also will be part of this beat.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Conceives and executes original story ideas and spots daily news stories of interest to Roanoke Times and roanoke.com readers.
  • Originates enterprising story ideas and completes such assignments from the business editor on a wide range of topics.
  • Conceives photo and graphics ideas to help illustrate stories.
  • Develops a wide range of sources.
  • Contributes breaking news posts to the online report
  • Works occasional weekend shifts covering general assignment news

Minimum skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum one year daily newspaper reporting experience
  • Experience covering business is preferred but not required
  • Proven ability to write clearly and accurately, and meet deadlines
  • Skilled in listening, learning and understanding other people.
  • Collegial, collaborative and decisive; comfortable with change and able to adapt.
