Reuters is looking for an experienced and enterprising reporter who will use the metals industry and heavy manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Deere and Harley-Davidson as the foundation for a beat that would range widely into issues of trade, labor and the impact of digital technology on the U.S. manufacturing economy.
We are looking for a strong writer and thinker who can develop creative, distinctive approaches to companies and industries that are a century old – and are now at the center of upheavals in politics and technology.
The Trump administration is challenging China and Mexico over trade, and steel promises to be at the center of the administration’s efforts. Companies such as Caterpillar and Harley will be among the first to feel the impact of trade retaliation or a rising dollar. At the same time, both could profit if Trump is able to inject billions into the economy to rebuild infrastructure.
The successful candidate will have a track record of generating scoops and exclusives, and a deep pool of sources – or a proven ability to quickly develop sources – in the industry, unions, regulators, investors and other stakeholders.
We are looking for someone who can break news about corporate strategies, supply chains, lobbying efforts, and other issues of interest to investors.
The successful candidate will work with colleagues in Washington to connect policy and legislation to their effect on companies and their workers. This role is ideally based in Chicago or Detroit, but we will consider other locations.
