Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram seeks a multiplatform editor

The Portland Press Herald – which recently became a nonprofit news organization – seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to edit stories, lay out pages and help run our website.

We are an ambitious news organization with high standards and a talented staff, and we need a superb editor to join our team. The person hired for this position needs many skills, and the duties may change depending on the day. Over the course of the week, this editor could lay out pages, design the Sports section front, design Page One, edit and post staff stories, select and post national and world news as well as sports stories, write headlines, and determine the presentation of journalism on our website. A background in sports may be helpful, as the position will likely work primarily in the sports department at first. But that could change over time, especially as our digital transformation continues.

Our editors are more than grammar sticklers. They prosecute stories, looking for holes and structural problems. They sharpen headlines, ledes and captions. They pay close attention to how our journalism is rendered digitally and improve its display without being asked.

If you are the best at what you do and share our passion for ambitious journalism, this is a great opportunity. You will be part of Maine’s finest and largest newsgathering operation, and you’ll live in a region with an extraordinarily high quality of life. A minimum of five years of daily news experience is required.

The Portland Press Herald is owned by the National Trust for Local News, a national nonprofit dedicated to conserving, transforming and sustaining local news organizations.

We are an EEO employer.

Send your resume and work samples to Executive Editor Steve Greenlee at sgreenlee@pressherald.com.
