The Digital editor specializes in monitoring metrics data and working closely with newsroom editors to shape actionable insights about how editorial coverage is performing across platforms. The role is designed for journalists who can provide deep analysis of content topics to identify opportunities to drive engagement and grow conversions as we serve our loyal subscribers and seek new, diverse subscribers. The digital editor is a key partner in collaborative projects between Editorial/Product/Web Development teams to shape content strategy initiatives and experiments, ranging from SEO to personalization to emerging platforms.
Essential Duties & Functions:
- Use Parse.ly, Google Search Console and other SEO tools to forecast trends and monitor realtime/long-range performance of Newsday content. Maintain familiarity with the industry’s evolving SEO best practices, emerging tech and strategize how changes should be integrated into the newsroom’s workflows.
- Work independently with metrics software programs to produce daily, weekly and monthly reports for newsroom coverage teams.
- Analyze data to identify trends and share actionable insights with newsroom editors and reporters to help grow and diversify Newsday’s audience.
- Work with the HUB/homepage programmers and assigning editors to update headlines, tagging, meta descriptions and internal linking. The role involves some hands-on work in the newsroom’s CMS platforms as well as assisting with site programming as needed.
- Track and evaluate metrics trends for alerts, email newsletters and social platforms.
- Research audience patterns and key SEO terms to formulate an optimization strategy ahead of annual events, elections, holidays, important court trials and seasonal evergreen content.
- Support the larger metrics team’s goals by preparing presentations and presenting data in staff SEO and metrics training.
- Attend news meetings and prepare select reports in the absence of the Newsroom Audience Metrics Director.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills:
- A demonstrated understanding of journalism ethics, standards and AP style.
- Expertise with standard metrics and SEO programs such as Parse.ly, Metrics for News and Adobe. Advanced Excel/spreadsheet management skills is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to shape journalistically sound insights from raw metrics data.
- Collaborative mindset focused on building a rapport with others on a cross-functional team.
- Willingness to multi-task on quick-turnaround assignments and long-term projects, pivoting as the team’s priorities shift.
- Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, nights and holidays.
Compensation: The annual salary for this position is $86,000.
