New York daily seeks business reporter to cover IBM

The Times Herald-Record is looking for a smart, enterprising reporter to work on the business news desk. The reporter will work Monday through Friday out of our Middletown office on breaking news and enterprise stories for print and our website, recordonline.com. The beat includes economic development, commercial real estate and a handful of publicly traded companies, most notably IBM. This is a non-exempt position reporting to an assigning editor. The goal for reporters is to become the best source of local news and information for our readers.

Duties:

– Contribute regularly to the daily news report in print and online with stories, briefs, posts to social media and other information. Develop enterprise stories in consultation with editors.

– Develop key sources and mine the beat to get ahead of the news.

– Work closely with editors, photo coordinator and others to ensure that stories are complemented by visual elements when appropriate. Provide graphic information and photo requests in a timely fashion. Shoot basic photos and video, as needed, to complement stories.

– Update stories for posting to recordonline.com as news breaks and develops, or as directed by the editor.

Must have the ability and willingness to:

– Experiment with different story forms to find the best way of telling a particular story.

– Make deadlines.

– Work with numbers and have an interest in financial reporting.

Skills/Qualifications:

– Two years of journalism experience, preferably covering business

– Familiarity with spreadsheets and databases

– Strong communication skills and the ability to multitask and thrive in a demanding, fast-moving environment.
