Posted by Chris Roush

Global regulatory risk newswire MLex is looking for a Competition Correspondent for its Brussels bureau. This is an opportunity for a keen and driven reporter to dive deep into one of the most defining regulatory stories of our time: competition.

The role:

The beat involves coverage of competition regulation and litigation in the EU. MLex seeks to get ahead of the procedural story through deep-dive analyses of legislation and litigation to anticipate where regulatory problems may lie. It’s a high-pressure beat in which there’s an expectation you’ll break market-moving news while offering the forward-looking analysis that helps inform decision-makers.

MLex is a real-time newswire and the successful candidate will be expected to turn around urgent copy quickly. It is critical that the successful candidate can successful spot a story that will appeal to MLex’s broad-but-demanding readership. We also publish in-depth reporting and commentary, and the Competition Correspondent will be expected to identify risks posed by legislation ahead of our competitors and use this expertise to write in-depth, big impact investigations and commentary pieces.

The Competition Correspondent will work with our European competition team in Brussels and London, while working closely with colleagues in other bureaux and the broader data, privacy and security team.

The successful candidate must be able to write clearly and concisely in impeccable English. Native-level fluency in any other additional European language, particularly Spanish or French, is necessary to succeed in the position.

The successful candidate will be expected to work in our Brussels office at least three days a week under our post-Covid hybrid working policy; the other two days may be worked from home (accurate as of October 2024, subject to revision).

What we are looking for:

  • At least two years of journalism experience
  • Drive to break exclusive news and write poignant analysis
  • Writing with speed and flair in both newswire and commentary formats
  • Knowledge of the EU regulatory environment
  • Interest in competition regulation
  • Broad network of sources across EU agencies, industry and law firms
  • Social skills to work with a diverse, international team
  • Fluent in English
  • Native-level fluency in another European language, particularly Spanish or French
  • Willingness to travel
