Minneapolis/St. Paul Biz Journal seeks business reporter/digital producer

The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal is seeking a reporter/digital producer who can marry strong traditional journalism skills – source building, sharp news judgment, interviewing prowess, strong analytical and investigative reporting, clear writing, document use – with online and social media know-how.

Whatever the platform, this reporter will produce content that is accompanied by perspective and context for our fast-growing audience of business owners, executives and professionals in the Twin Cities area.

Possible beats include retailing & restaurant companies, manufacturing/food production, advertising agencies, banking and aviation/travel; beat assignments will depend on candidate expertise, interest and our priorities.

DUTIES:

A Business Journal reporter-digital producer is expected perform the role of a Business Journal beat reporter while maintaining certain functions central to the publication’s digital operations. As a reporter, this individual is expected to contribute both short-form (daily online posts) and long-form (print) stories to our news products from his or her assigned beats. Scoops matter. A lot. Specifically, reporters will be expected to own their beat audience and conversation; use networking events, Twitter, LinkedIn and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify their source pool and audience; work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize impact and accessibility of stories reported; and meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement. On the digital-producer side, this individual will be expected to manage the newsroom’s social-media platforms, produce key digital-only features that drive audience engagement, and write short news posts as needed.

SKILLS:

Proven ability in reporting and writing; ability to work independently and remotely; ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources; strong analytical and investigative-interviewing skills; ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person and online, and to develop sources and audience. Competitive, collaborative, curious. Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure. Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors. Some experience with web publishing and social media required. Multimedia skills, including video, photos, broadcast, on-camera, are helpful.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 1-3 years of journalism experience; Experience publishing on web platforms and using social media to source and promote content. Knowledge of business and/or business community a plus.

EDUCATION: B.A. journalism or equivalent work experience
