McClatchy is seeking a strategic, collaborative editor to lead our news operations in Georgia.
As the company’s Georgia Editor, the person in this role will work with a talented team of journalists in newsrooms in Macon and Columbus. This leader should embrace and elevate these newsrooms, which already have long histories in the markets they serve.
The opportunity is to accelerate our digital transition, leveraging these storied and high-impact newsrooms into a sustainable news operation that produces accountability journalism, relevant service journalism and breaking news that is first and best on the most important issues.
The successful candidate will be a talented news editor who can help draw the best work from our reporters, editors, visual and audience-focused journalists. This person must be a thoughtful leader with experience in newsroom transformation, someone able to approach the role with creative, fresh ideas on how to serve a local audience that is as diverse as the country overall.
The leader should have a proven commitment to raising standards for diversity and inclusion both in news coverage and talent recruitment.
We are looking for a bold, accomplished leader with strong communication skills, a sense of urgency and perseverance, and a leader who can drive engagement at all levels of the organization. The person in this position should be eager to collaborate with company colleagues.
The candidate should possess the ability to move the needle on community engagement so that it ties directly to local audience growth. Success in this role will be measured by the distinctive and audience-centric journalism produced by the Georgia newsrooms, as well as audience and subscriber growth and retention for that differentiated content. This requires a command of audience analytics and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and a desire to experiment and adjust across platforms as the news environment dictates.
Change is a central feature of a digital newsroom, and the next Georgia Editor must be both confident and conscientious in guiding a motivated newsroom to always keep our community’s interests at the heart of our journalism.
What you’ll bring:
- You’ll be the local “face” of both The Telegraph in Macon and the Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus at community events or meetings.
- You should be excited about forming partnerships with organizations, other leaders and readers across the area.
Also:
- 5 or more years of newsroom experience, with at least three years of that being in a leadership role.
- Excellent line editing skills and ability to effectively convey any edits to the reporter.
- Solid news judgment and demonstrated ability to multitask.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable working collaboratively across teams and newsrooms as needed.
- Open to experimenting with news content, tools and platforms.
