The Kansas City Star seeks an aggressive, enterprising Kansas City Royals beat reporter to join its award-winning newsroom in one of America’s most diverse and fast-growing communities.

At The Star, we put a premium on breaking stories first as well as investing in hard-nosed, accountability journalism that our audience can’t get anywhere else.

Our journalism focuses on our local communities, and in that role we have the ability to spotlight problems, highlight solutions and truly make a difference — all the reasons you got into journalism. And we are part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation, with newsrooms in 30 communities across the U.S.

In our Royals reporter, we’re seeking a versatile and resourceful journalist who is as skilled and knowledgeable about Major League Baseball as she/he/they are in knocking on doors to track down sources. One of the biggest storylines in Kansas City right now, sports-related or otherwise, is the Royals’ ambitious stadium/entertainment district project and funding/financing issues that will accompany its design and construction.

Responsibilities:

  • Focus on stories that build readership
  • Work well in a team environment

Qualifications:

  • Master engaging multimedia storytelling
  • Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy through aggregating and storytelling tools
  • A deep knowledge of baseball, and Major League Baseball in particular
  • Ability to build and cultivate sources that produce a constant flow of meaningful scoops and news to our passionate Royals fan base
  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • 1-3 years of sports-reporting experience. (Minimum years of experience)
  • Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works)
  • Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism
  • Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories
  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving over the course of a 162-game MLB season and typically busy offseason
  • Familiarity with data, public records and business reports
