The Washington Post is looking for an accomplished, ambitious and innovative journalist to become its deputy Business editor, helping to oversee coverage of technology, the economy and an array of beats across a diverse and dynamic department.
The deputy Business editor’s portfolio demands dexterity, organization and a passion for making complex subjects accessible to readers. Our accountability reporters undertake high-stakes investigations, our breaking-news team jumps on economic and business developments, and our columnists bring data, investigative zeal and authoritative personal experience to their takes on navigating a technologically enhanced but economically imbalanced society. The Business staff, which numbers more than 60 journalists, also includes beat reporters covering topics ranging from the new generation of weight-loss drugs to the commercial space industry.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Business editor to drive daily coverage. Help set ambitious coverage priorities across the staff, seek excellence in story selection and framing, and elevate copy.
- Directly manage teams covering economics, regulated industries, breaking news and personal finance – and assist with technology and financial investigations.
- Communicate with teams across the newsroom. Identify opportunities for collaboration on consequential story targets and guide them.
- Encourage the production of stories that break news or demand attention in other ways, for example through compelling visuals, audio or graphics.
- Foster a supportive, empathetic work culture that furthers staff development and sets high expectations for achievement.
Preferred qualifications:
- At least five years of professional journalism experience.
- A track record of editing or reporting with distinction on business, technology or Washington policymaking.
- A sophisticated understanding of The Post’s approach to business and tech journalism, which prioritizes coverage of the often-fraught interactions between Washington and industry, as well as accountability reporting about companies with an outsized presence in our lives.
- A vision for harnessing business and tech journalism to break news, effect change and engage new audiences.
- A collaborative spirit and excellent communication skills.
- Supervisory experience is a big plus.
