Pensions & Investments, Crain Communications’ international news source for institutional investors and money management, is seeking a senior reporter to join our team to cover alternative investments and the two largest public pension funds in the U.S.
This journalist will report and produce editorial content for P&I’s website, pionline.com, and our monthly print publication with a sharp focus on real estate, infrastructure, private equity and venture capital, and how investors are incorporating these asset classes into portfolios. Additionally, the reporter will be charged with covering a select number of public pension funds, including CalPERS and CalSTRS.
Such content includes, but is not limited to, breaking news articles, news analysis, enterprise reporting and social media posts.

Qualified applicants must be able to tell stories that dig deep into trends affecting institutional investing. They must thrive in a fast-paced news environment and be able to toggle between breaking news and enterprise. Candidates must be comfortable with tapping various analytic tools such as Chartbeat or Adobe to help refine coverage.
This position is work from home, but individual must be based in Los Angeles or in Northern California (San Franciso/Sacramento).
Basic Requirements:
· B.A. in journalism or related field required.
· At least five years’ experience in investing or corporate finance reporting.
· Ability to understand and use corporate financial documents such as 10Ks or proxy statements in your journalism.
· Proven ability to develop sources and work a beat.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
· Ability to write accurately and clearly and engage readers.
· Knowledge of SEO best practices in headline writing.
Preferences:
· Knowledge of alternative investments and the role they play in institutional portfolios.
· Knowledge of defined benefit plans and how they operate.
This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
Pay Transparency Disclosure:
The estimated salary range for this position is $95,000 to $120,000.
