The Business, Technology, and Innovation Unit at NBC News is looking for a senior editor who has extensive experience editing business reporters and a keen eye for what makes a good business story. As the senior business editor, this person will be tasked with helping to shape the digital editorial voice for business/innovation news for the unit, working closely with the digital team, the Executive Editor, the digital data reporter, and digital business reporters and freelancers. Our ideal candidate is someone who is accustomed to working in a fast paced news environment, pays close attention to detail, and has experience managing and editing reporters with various levels of experience, including freelance reporters. This person should also have national experience working in digital/print environments as an editor/reporter and who has successfully collaborated closely with other departments and units.
Job Duties
- Supervise, assign, and develop digital data reporter, business reporters and freelancers
- Perform daily edits and provide editorial guidance of business news with accuracy and skill, often under deadline pressure
- Monitor daily news to identify business stories of relevance to the NBC News audience
- Leads business digital coverage for unit when news breaks, working closely with the digital unit and digital breaking business news editor to help guide cross platform coverage including social media strategy
- Work closely and nurture a strong relationship with the digital unit to ensure close daily editorial collaboration for all business/innovation stories
- Ensure all pitches and reporting is accurate and adheres to NBC News standards and editorial guidelines
- Help maintain editorial calendar along with senior leadership team
- Contribute to editorial guidance on all breaking, daily, and future news related to business, tech, and innovation for NBC News, MSNBC, and NBC News Now
- Actively foster a diverse and inclusive work environment within the unit and mirror that work editorially by amplifying underrepresented communities, voices and experiences for our audience
- Fills in for other senior roles in the unit as needed
Qualifications/Requirements
- 7+ years relevant experience in business and technology writing/editing
- Mastery of AP style
- Must be willing to work early morning hours, weekends and evenings, especially when news breaks.
- Broadcast experience is a plus
