Miami Herald seeks an economic mobility reporter

May 7, 2024

Posted by Chris Roush

The Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald seek an experienced journalist and storyteller to launch a new economic mobility reporting initiative.

This reporter will dig deeply into data and historical precedent to reveal the sometimes-hidden issues driving economic disparity in South Florida, hit the streets to show how those issues are affecting people in our community, and explore potential solutions.

Affordable housing, educational opportunity, accessible health care, job training, financial lending – these issues are foundational to economic mobility and will be core to this beat. We’re looking for a reporter who is equally comfortable distilling the data on these topics and showing their impact with exceptional shoe leather reporting.

This coverage will include daily news stories, short-term projects and deep enterprise. Accountability and solutions-focused journalism will be key priorities.

This is a two-year grant-based opportunity with the possibility of extension.

What you’ll bring

Candidates should have the following skills:

  • At least five years of journalism experience in a daily publishing environment for online audiences
  • Experience analyzing government and other data sources to identify trends
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas into language easily understood by a general audience
  • Strong English writing skills
  • Creative storytelling skills beyond traditional narratives
  • A willingness to engage audiences via social media and live events
  • Data skills preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies, such as AI

This position is philanthropically funded for two years. Extension of the position is dependent on receiving additional funding. Funders have no input on editorial decisions, which remain with the newsroom.
