Fortune is hiring a Global News Director to oversee breaking news coverage across Europe, the US and Asia. This position will report to Fortune’s Editor in Chief.
The ideal candidate is a digital veteran with deep business knowledge across Fortune’s core areas of finance, tech, markets and the economy. They need to spot important news angles global executives need to know and distill what it means in the bigger picture for our thought leadership audience.
The right candidate will work with Fortune editors across the newsroom and around the world to craft site and magazine-leading stories that are smart, high quality, timely and relevant. They should have an affinity for a fast-paced digital media environment, the ability to optimize stories for digital distribution, and a love of business news that’s contagious to their team, the Fortune newsroom and our readers. They should be collaborative and entrepreneurial, eager to build out and scale a truly 24/7 operation to help sustain our historic, 95-year-old brand for its next century. They will mentor and train younger journalists while also working alongside some of the most tenured and respected business journalists in the world.
This person has the ability to travel to Fortune offices and conferences around the world. Live journalism experience and comfort interviewing executives in front of live audiences is a plus.
As Global News Director you will:
- Have a strong sense of the top business stories that should lead Fortune.com
- Recruit a global team of editors and reporters
- Quickly execute assignments so Fortune is leading the news cycle
- Understand what makes a compelling headline and train your team to find the most
interesting angles. SEO knowledge is a plus. - Grow Fortune’s readership by making business news stories fast and approachable to a
wider audience. - Be entrepreneurial and creative. We are looking for someone with a compelling vision to
show us how an efficient news operation should run.
The ideal candidate would have:
- Have outstanding story sense
- Have the ability to assign and edit stories across key industries such as tech, finance, markets
- Have experience running a breaking news operation
- Have strong management and team building skills
Location: Our editorial team is based across time zones and international borders. This role can be based in the US, with a preference for NYC. If you’re based within commuting distance of one of our offices, there will be a minimum of 3 days/week in the office.
