FT’s “Moral Money” newsletter seeks a reporter/editor

July 29, 2021

Posted by Chris Roush

Moral Money, the FT’s award-winning newsletter on sustainability issues, is seeking a new Editor to lead coverage and further development. You will cover sustainability issues for the Moral Money newsletter and the wider Financial Times. The Moral Money platform was created two years ago to initiate coverage of the Environmental, Social and Governance world and in that time it has already won two SABEW awards, produced strong commercial results and carved out a powerful franchise for the FT in this fast-growing sector. F

Moral Money’s expansion is likely to continue in the coming year since sustainability and ESG issues are becoming increasingly important for business, finance and markets, and our coverage of them is a key factor that differentiates FT coverage from rivals, particularly in the American market. There is enormous scope for scoops, agenda-setting analysis and deep reporting in this field, and events such as the forthcoming COP-26 climate negotiations in Glasgow, creation of new ESG accounting standards, rise of the racial justice movement, gender equality campaigns and rising ESG activism mean that the story is likely to be of high interest to FT readers for the foreseeable future.

The ESG space is awash with PR spin, so one of the key responsibilities of the role is to cut through this and ensure we hold companies to account.

The position has previously been based in New York.  However, it could also potentially be based in London. It can be performed in a fairly flexible manner, albeit with regular scheduled commitments around the twice-weekly newsletter publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contributing to, and editing, the newsletter

  • Creating multimedia content for multiple beats across several geographies

  • Breaking news and writing trenchant analysis for the main FT

  • Collaborating with FT reporters and liaising closely with teams covering environmental issues and finance in particular

  • Considerable opportunity to be creative about story and platform development

  • Directing coverage and spotting opportunities to develop this coverage in an entrepreneurial manner, working in tandem with other parts of the FT network

Key Skills

  • A keen interest in business and finance, ideally combined with knowledge of global financial markets

  • Skilled at linking the flows of money and commerce to wider societal and political themes, as well as environmental science.

  • Excellent multi-tasker, able to prioritise effectively

  • Exemplary attention to detail

  • Creative thinker

  • Experience collaborating with reporters
