FT seeks an editorial operations manager

The Financial Times has an exciting opportunity working with the newsroom and senior editors to manage Editorial’s global operations.

This is an essential role in the Managing Editor’s office, and requires flexibility, initiative and the ability to solve problems. The successful candidate will be part of a core team ensuring that FT journalists are appropriately equipped to produce our gold-standard journalism.

Key duties:

  • Oversight and management of contracts, including newswires and data feeds, in liaison with the Procurement team

  • Responsibility for management of Editorial office spaces including Bracken House, in liaison with the FT Facilities team

  • Administration of the risk assessment and correspondent safety processes, working with the deputy managing editor and senior editors

  • Management of overseas bureau operations, including leases and facilities

  • Oversight of journalist equipment requirements, working with Technology and Procurement to ensure alignment with FT company policies

  • Represent Editorial on the FT Health & Safety committee

  • Budget management and liaison with Finance on assets and hardware

  • Approver for ad hoc projects and requests, plus covering for colleagues in the managing editor’s office

 Who we are looking for

The successful candidate must have the confidence and competence to manage a highly complex 600-person journalistic enterprise. This role requires responsive and clear communication, the ability to problem-solve, budget awareness and an understanding of Editorial priorities and strategy. It is essential to have integrity and the discretion to handle confidential matters. A sense of humour, patience and resilience are valuable.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
