Hadi becomes chief deputy at NY Times biz department

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following:

I’m excited to announce: Mohammed Hadi has become my principal deputy in the Business department.

Mo has been doing the job for a while now, and so I don’t have to tell you that he is supremely suited to the gig.

In this role, Mo will help me oversee the daily business report, plan coverage and coordinate with the masthead and the News desk. And Mo will continue to help develop careers.

On a daily basis, Mo improves our journalism and the well-being of the Business department. He’ll continue to work closely with the other department deputies — Kevin McKenna, Pui-Wing Tam, Ashwin Seshagiri and of course Rich Barbieri in Seoul. All have been key to the strength of our work, our embrace of change and imagining what lies ahead.

Two years ago when I wrote you about Mo, David Enrich provided this cogent and sophisticated analysis: Mo “is super smart and everyone loves him.”

Mo has been a deputy since early 2022. Before joining The Times in 2018, he was executive editor at Business Insider. He had previously worked at Bloomberg, helping to oversee deals coverage. Before that he was an editor and writer at The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires. Mo has worked in Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and New York.

He graduated from the University of Richmond and has a master’s degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
