Fortune seeks a managing editor

February 8, 2022

Posted by Chris Roush

Fortune is hiring a thoughtful and energetic managing editor to ensure our newsroom functions at the highest level possible and continually improves. This is not writing or editing role. Rather, this is a leadership position that will greatly impact how we hire, onboard, manage and retain talented journalists across the organization.

You will:

  • Design and implement an onboarding process that gets new hires up to speed as efficiently as possibly and manage access to our productivity and communication tools.
  • Guide editors as they become stronger people managers through coaching, especially with tough conversations.
  • Be a sounding board and safe place for everyone in the newsroom to discuss concerns and questions and escalate the relevant queries to the right leaders across the newsroom.
  • Lead training efforts to ensure our journalists are continually improving.
  • Assist department heads with recruiting and hiring with an eye on diversifying the newsroom.
  • Ensure our journalists feel ownership over their work and have clear career paths for advancement.

The right candidate:

  • Has experience working in newsroom management—including coverage, workflow, culture or careers. Experience in recruiting and operations is a bonus.
  • Doesn’t shy away from hard conversations and can balance honesty with empathy and kindness.
  • Is a natural problem solver and can escalate challenges before they become major issues.
  • Has a strong track record of developing trusting relationships, collaborating, and building consensus.
  • Is flexible and adaptable.
  • Effectively prioritizes tasks in a fast-paced environment and juggles creative personalities.
  • Communicates professionally and effectively in a remote environment.

Fortune’s headquarters is in NYC, but our editorial team is based across time zones and international borders. We’re working remotely right now because of the pandemic. We encourage applicants between the coasts to apply. The position will report to the editorial director.
