City News Service is searching for an experienced and enthusiastic reporter to tackle the most challenging yet rewarding position you’ll ever have.

Our Los Angeles City/County Bureau Chief is tasked primarily with covering the city of Los Angeles, chronicling decisions and policies that often reverberate across the nation — from the mayor’s office to the 15 City Council offices to the Police Commission overseeing the LAPD. As our main political writing position, the job can also extend to coverage of countywide issues such as regional transportation decision-making, operations of the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex and even state and federal legislation with local impact. The beat requires a journalist who’s able to gather information on multiple stories at once, then compile that information into clean copy produced under wire-service deadline demands. Organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to think critically and write quickly.

We’re looking for a “news junkie” able to immerse into the local government scene and interpret the ever-changing political winds for readers.

The ideal candidate will live in and have extensive knowledge of the Los Angeles region and preferably have at least two years experience covering news in a fast-paced environment. Applicants should be able to produce accurate, clean copy on deadline, be prepared to file multiple stories each day, be a team player and be proficient in AP style and grammar.

Salary: $45,000 to $57,000
