Bloomberg seeks a metals reporter in Toronto

February 16, 2022

Posted by Chris Roush

Bloomberg is looking for an enterprising reporter to chronicle what promises to be one of the major challenges in the world’s transition away from fossil fuels: where to find sufficient supplies of metal. We want someone who can break news on the biggest companies responsible for supplying the materials key to both financial markets and the global energy transition, while also being able to chronicle the environmental challenges and political tension inherent in mining.

The successful candidate must be comfortable interviewing executives in the boardroom as well as workers out in the field. We’re looking for an aggressive reporter, able to break important news and then step back and write the definitive story for a broad audience on an industry in a period of extreme change, with shareholders increasing pressure on companies to reduce their carbon footprint, add diversity to c-suites and boards, and take action on longstanding problems including workplace harassment.

You must able to work as part of a multinational team, as well as collaborate with Bloomberg’s website, TV, radio, Green and Businessweek. You’ll be expected to perform independently at the highest standards, while also enthusiastically supporting bureau and group efforts and collaborating across teams and regions.

We’ll trust you to:

    •   Develop a strong network of sources to break news on the biggest miners in Canada and the U.S.
    •   Break news on changing dynamics in how gold, silver, copper and EV metals are dug up and sold around the world, collaborating with colleagues in other regions and on teams that cover automakers, battery suppliers, foreign exchange and interest rates
    •   Explore the impact of climate change on miners and the communities around their projects
    •   Craft coverage for both expert Bloomberg clients and a broader readership.
        You’ll need to have:
  •   Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  •   Experience reporting news in a real-time, breaking news environment. Some metals market or mining industry and finance knowledge is a bonus.
  •   Ability to write quickly and concisely under deadline pressure.
  •   Proven ability to make and build sources.
