I’m pleased to announce Brent Jones is unanimously elected President of the Dow Jones News Fund (DJNF) by its Board of Directors, succeeding Dick Levine, who is retiring following 16 years of remarkable service.
The Dow Jones News Fund has promoted careers in journalism since 1958, benefiting thousands of students who have gained invaluable experience through paid professional internships and other educational opportunities. Many of the organization’s alumni now work for Dow Jones today–including Brent himself.
As DJNF’s new President, Brent will work closely with Shirley Carswell, DJNF Executive Director, to continue advancing the DJNF mission. He will continue to serve as the Journal’s Editor of Culture, Training & Outreach.
An award-winning journalist, Brent joined the Journal in 2018 and directs the newsroom’s training, outreach and culture initiatives, including our groundbreaking partnerships with Morgan State University and Lehman College. He also serves on advisory boards for the Freedom Forum and International Center for Journalists.
As Brent steps into this role, we are immensely grateful for Dick’s inspired leadership. He was appointed to the position in 2005, following nearly 40 years of service to Dow Jones, first as a reporter in the Journal’s Washington bureau, then as a correspondent and columnist, before moving into management in 1980. Dick was a DJNF intern in the class of 1960.
Under his leadership, DJNF has continued to advocate for increased diversity in newsrooms across the country. It’s fitting to note that this year’s internship class, in the final year of Dick’s tenure, is the most diverse in the organization’s history, with 62% students of color and 75% women.
