The Plain Dealer came second for “Best Daily Newspaper” for papers with a circulation of 60,000 or more in the 2020 edition of the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists awards.
The awards received 472 entries, 239 awards were announced and will be celebrated virtually Nov. 6.
Apart from The Plain Dealer, two freelancers from cleveland.com were also award recipients.
The list of winners is as follows:
- John Caniglia: First-place in Best Criminal Justice Reporting for the large circulation category; Second place for Best Reporter in Ohio in the Best of Show, large circulation category.
- Janet Cho: First-place in Best Business Reporting for the large circulation category
- Lisa DeJong: First-place for Best Photographer in Ohio in the Best of Show, large circulation category
- Rachel Dissell: Second-place in Best Children’s Issues Reporting for the large circulation category
- Rachel Dissell and Andrea Simakis: First-place in Best Investigative Reporting for the large circulation category, First-place in Best Special Section for the Best of Show, large circulation category
- Jordyn Grzelewski: First-place in Best Public Service Journalism for the large circulation category
- William “Skip” Hall: First-place in Best Headline Writing for the large circulation category
- Steven Litt: Second-place for Best Critic in Ohio for the Best of Show, large circulation category
- Michael McIntyre: First-place in Best Feature Reporting for the large circulation category
- Beth Mlady: Second-place in Best Feature Writing for the freelance, digital media category
- Patrick O’Donnell: First-place in Best Education Issues Reporting for the large circulation category
- Terry Pluto: Second-place in Best Sports Reporting for the large circulation category
- Bob Sandrick: First place in Best Government Reporting for the freelance, digital media category
