Helen Thomas, currently European editor of the Wall Street Journal’s “Heard on the Street” column, has been appointed as business editor at BBC Newsnight.

Thomas, who, prior to joining the Wall Street Journal in 2013, worked for the Financial Times for nine years, started her career as an analyst for J.P. Morgan in the City. While at the FT, she was the paper’s mining correspondent, the New York-based mergers and acquisitions correspondent and a writer for the Lex column. She also helped launch financial blog FT Alphaville.

“Helen has a rare combination of deep expert knowledge, a remarkable facility for explaining the financial world to laypeople, and a rapier-sharp analytical mind,” said Ian Katz, editor of Newsnight, in a statement. “I’m delighted she will be following in a great tradition of Newsnight economics and business journalists.”

At the Journal, Thomas wrote about mining, energy and pharmaceuticals as well as corporate governance issues.

I am thrilled to be joining the team at Newsnight,” said Thomas. “It is an honor to be invited to work with such a talented group of journalists and to have the opportunity to explore the biggest business and finance stories of the day for the Newsnight audience.”
