WSJ partner in India lifting content from New York Times

Patricia Kranz, deputy Sunday business editor at the New York Times, has written a memo posted on the Romenesko site in which she claims that a Wall Street Journal partner in India has been running Times’ content on its web site without attribution.

Kranz wrote, “Upon further examination, it appears that the site has published numerous other stories from the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune, without permission or attribution. This would seem to be a flagrant case of mass copyright infringement. Furthermore, because of the prominent Wall Street Journal logo at the top of each page, the false impression is that these articles originated from the Wall Street Journal.

“In the ‘about HT Media’ section at the bottom of the livemint.com site, it states that its flagship newspaper is the Hindustan Times. It also states that it has launched a national business newspaper, Mint, with an exclusive agreement with Wall Street Journal to publish Journal branded news and information in India. The logo at the top of the site says livemint.com/The Wall Street Journal.”

Read more here. The Hindustan Times’ business newspaper Mint, which started in 2006, is run by former Wall Street Journal deputy managing editor Raju Narisetti.

  • I'm in South East Asia and this kind of thing happens all the time in local languages. Many "journalists" are paid to translate content from English overseas publications, yet this rarely gets picked up precisely because of the languge issue. It's rare to see it happen in English.
