Jason Anders, the chief news editor at The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement:
All,
I’m happy to announce that Sheila Courter is named Programming Editor, taking on a critical new role at the heart of how we serve our growing digital audience.
In this senior position, Sheila will own our daily digital publishing agenda, taking the lead on making sure that everything we publish, from every corner, is programmed with purpose to ensure we are connecting in the strongest way possible with our online audience. She will work closely with colleagues in strategy, platforms, publishing and the coverage teams, heavily informed by data and our coverage priorities. I’m particularly excited that Sheila will bring her decades of experience, sharp news insight and innovative spirit to the Hub, where she will be part of the senior team that shapes our daily coverage. Sheila will report to me.
Sheila joined Dow Jones as a news assistant, and has since held a series of leadership roles across the Journal, including a number of trailblazing posts connected to charting our digital future. She has spent the past two years leading our efforts around the newsroom to transform how we work together during a time of rapid growth, which has included everything from how we break news when split seconds count to the way we tell ambitious stories online. Previously, she was our 2016 Elections Editor where she helped lead a digital-focused reinvention of the way the Journal covers elections, a deputy with US News overseeing national and political coverage online and, in an early incarnation of the role she is taking on today, Day Editor of our newly formed digital news hub. Before her distinguished digital career, Sheila directed copy desk operations and was a news editor for Page One.
Sheila is a graduate of Villanova University and Temple University, and lives in New Jersey with her husband and two children. She is also an avid marathon runner who has lost track of how many races she has run.
Please join me in congratulating Sheila.
