Wall Street Journal business editor Jason Anders sent out the following announcement:
We are at a remarkable moment in the global energy story, with a U.S. boom giving way to a supply glut that has reordered industries, sent tremors through the world economy and affected nearly every corner of our coverage. The Journal has been far in front on this story, and we are seizing this moment to bolster our leadership of this core coverage that our readers find indispensable.Elena Cherney is appointed Global Energy Editor. Elena became Canada Bureau Chief in 2014, a homecoming of sorts after serving as a Toronto-based reporter for the Journal from 2000 to 2007. Canada is of course one global focus point for energy, and as bureau chief, as well as in her earlier jobs, Elena has shown herself to be both deeply knowledgeable and passionate about the energy story. Prior to her return to the Journal, she was a senior editor at Canada’s Globe and Mail, serving as editor of the paper’s Report on Business from 2009 to 2012 and then Managing Editor from 2012 until 2014. She grew up in Montreal and is a graduate of Yale University. As our global chief, Elena will coordinate coverage with our talented reporters and editors around the world, working across bureaus and across platforms to drive this vital story. She will remain based in Toronto, where she lives with her two children, and will report to me.
Miguel Bustillo is appointed U.S. Energy Editor. Miguel is currently the Journal’s Western U.S. News Editor, where he has drawn on his broad reporting background to oversee general news coverage of 15 states spanning from Texas to Seattle to Hawaii. Since joining the Journal in 2008, he has also served as the deputy Texas bureau chief, and covered Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers. Miguel previously worked for 15 years at the Los Angeles Times, where he covered California state government and the environment, and served as Houston bureau chief, among other assignments. He is a 1992 graduate of New York University, a husband and father of a 10-year-old daughter. He is also a coffee snob and an incorrigible Philadelphia sports fanatic. Miguel will move to Houston from Dallas later this year, and will report to Elena.
Michael Amon is appointed Energy Editor for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mike joined the Journal in 2011 in Greater New York, where he directed political coverage as deputy bureau chief. He seamlessly transitioned to London last year, overseeing a high-impact team of reporters who cover energy and mining from the North Sea to Saudi Arabia. Before coming to the Journal, Mike was a reporter at Newsday and the Washington Post. He was born and raised in Yankton, S.D., the same hometown as Tom Brokaw and home to the 2015 state high school football champs, the Bucks. Mike will remain in London, and will report to Elena.
