WERT Prize for female biz journalists now accepting entries

Nominations for the WERT Prize, honoring excellence in business journalism by a woman for work that fosters a greater understanding of global business, are now open.

The prize is presented by the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia’s Journalism School in partnership with the Women’s Economic Round Table (WERT).

Thanks to funding from the Muriel F. Siebert Foundation, this year’s award will grow to $4,500 in acknowledgement of the 45th year of the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship. The award honors work published in English, across platforms – print, radio, broadcast and digital – for the 2019 calendar year.

The application window for the WERT Prize runs through March 15, 2020.

The Women’s Economic Round Table was founded in 1978 by Dr. Amelia Augustus and Maria Rolfte as an educational and networking forum for women leaders in the fields of economics, finance and business.

A jury of seven distinguished journalists will review submissions from across multiple continents.

This year, the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship welcomes Yinka Adegoke, founding editor, Quartz Africa, as a new WERT Prize jury member. In 2018, he was named as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine for his role in developing Quartz Africa as a vital news and features platform on the continent. Adegoke has reported from over 20 countries across Europe, Africa and North America.

“We are excited to welcome Yinka to the team. He brings a wealth of experience from Africa and Europe, where we hope to inspire and celebrate business journalism being produced by women in those regions,” said Knight-Bagehot director Ann Grimes.
